SIERRA SNOWFEST?   2 comments

We made a run for the mountains last weekend and it is always a real weather watcher. You see.. I hate chaining my tires. Time consuming, dirty, wet, cold……. just no fun….. oh you also better prepare to double or triple your drive time as well. I booked a room for us at a pretty remote lodge in the Sierra Nevada for a few days of cross-country skiing. We also wanted to take a few days to relax and enjoy getting away from the city. I watched the weather closely the week before and it was looking sunny and warm all weekend. In fact highs in the 50’s. Wow. Any snow left?
Then! Overnight the wind just starting whipping. We woke up and looked outside and it was like it went from summer to winter overnight. Anyone who is a Sierra Nevada veteran knows this is commonplace at 7,000 feet. Up here, a foot of snow in a matter of hours is a real probability. We were getting reports that the wind was gusting up to 50 mph. Well….. guess that rules out cross-country skiing to the edge of Royal Gorge. Probably would be blown into the 4,000 foot gorge. I checked the ski resorts website and it stated that the place was CLOSED the next day due to weather. I thought we better get the heck out now as we could be stuck here a week. The roads that lead back to this lodge probably take days to dig out in a nasty NorWester. We hightailed it out of there and unfortunately we hit chain controls. No one was there to stop us so we blew through the 14 mile control in the Honda. Absolutely no need for those things. I am from Minnesota dangit and we have never heard of chaining!
